Naranjo Hills Prince is a one-year-old (DOB: February 18, 2023) male Maremma looking for a farm of his own or paired with a female livestock guardian dog. He has been living with pastured chickens, goats, mini cows, potbellied pigs, and barn cats on our farm since he left the whelping box at four weeks old. He is excellent with and appears to prefer guarding poultry. He has been able to be unsupervised with both large breed and bantam chickens for several months now. Prince is a true working dog that is intelligent and independent, but loving with his human family, and lives to keep his charges safe. He is not suitable as a companion dog for the suburbs or for agritourism properties as he is protective of his flock and those he considers his people. Prince will take time to acclimate to a new family and farm. He has lived with and been trained by our family since his birth and is thus strongly bonded to us. During the acclimation period, Prince will need a secure environment to prevent escape (he will be confused and anxious being in a strange place), and a family who will be patient and have the time to be present to form a bond. Once he is bonded and feels safe, Prince will never leave your property and will protect you, and all that is important to you, with his life.

Prince was raised with Puppy Culture and as a result is okay with loud noises (storms, fireworks, screaming children, farm equipment, etc.). He will alert bark a few times when there is a loud noise, but when told all is fine, he settles right down. Prince has great recall, walks on a leash, and tolerates brushing. He will grab your hand gently when he’s had enough grooming and trusts that we will listen to his needs. We are still working on nail trimming as he is not a fan and needs lots of treats to get through the process. PennHIP (hip x-rays) was completed on July 5, 2023 and showed no signs of hip dysplasia/osteoarthritis (OA). He scored within the “mild risk” category for developing OA as a middle-aged dog. Prince has completed all his puppy vaccines (DHPP, rabies, and lepto), is on regular heart worm and flea/tick preventative, and microchipped.
